How to change a pair of PVC window hinges? Know the length and the stack height!

How to change a pair of PVC window hinges?

You may need to change hinges if:
  • PVC window does not open or close smoothly
  • There is a certain gap on the hinge side, when the window is closed
  • Some part is visibly broken.

You may need to buy new hinges, and you need to know next:
  • Type of hinges (top hung / side hung window)
  • Length of the hinge
  • The stack height of the hinge when closed.

You may buy new hinges at a local shop telling them what type of window you got, they will offer you the ones you need. You may also buy cheap hinges on eBay, provided you know the length and the stack height of your hinges.

When replacing the hinges, you will need to replace both of them:
  1. Open the window and unscrew your hinges from the window frame
  2. Lift the sash out
  3. Unscrew the hinge from the sash and put the new one on in the same position
  4. Turn the sash around and change the hinge on the other side
  5. Put the sash back into the frame and screw the new hinges onto the window frame.
TIP: you may need a cordless drill to unscrew the hinges.

Extras:
High thresholds often indicate that several layers of flooring have already been installed on top of one another. If you have several layers, it’s best to remove them before installing the new floor covering.

Buckling in solid hardwood floors indicates that the boards have loosened from the subfloor. Do not remove hardwood floors. Instead, refasten loose boards by drilling pilot holes and inserting flooring nails or screws. New carpet can be installed right over a well-fastened hardwood floor. New ceramic tile or resilient flooring should be installed over underlayment placed on the hardwood flooring.

Loose tiles may indicate widespread failure of the adhesive. Use a wallboard knife to test tiles. If tiles can be pried up easily in many different areas of the room, plan to remove all of the flooring.

Air bubbles trapped under resilient sheet flooring indicate that the adhesive has failed. The old flooring must be removed before the new covering can be installed.

Cracks in grout joints around ceramic tile are a sign that movement of the floor covering has caused, or has been caused by, deterioration of the adhesive layer. If more than 10% of the tiles are loose, remove the old flooring. Evaluate the condition of the underlayment (see opposite page) to determine if it also must be removed.

How to fix doors swinging open, DIY, Doors, How to

A couple of short-term fixes for doors that are swinging open. Got a screwdriver, a hammer and some cardboard?

1. Tighten hinge screws. If they are loose, replace the middle screws with longer ones.

2. Put some thin slice of plastic or cardboard between bottom hinge leaf and the frame as a shim. Then check if the door closes alright.

3. If your hinge pins are removable, try to slightly bend one or all of them to create more friction within the hinge.
- Close the door and shim it to prevent falling.
- Take out the hinge pin using hammer and nail or chisel and bent it in the middle a little (e. g. place the pin on a hard surface and hit it with a hammer).
- Drive the hinge pin back and test, if needed bent the pin just a little more.

Operable transom windows? Do such things exist?

As part of a renovation project we are trying to select doors that will open from a living space to a rooftop deck. We want to maximize the view and could go with either french or sliding doors but we also want to have moderately secure ventilation. Our architect had the idea of putting operable transom windows above the doors, but we're having trouble finding them--we've found plenty of patio doors that have a FIXED transom option, but none that are operable. Do such things exist?

Transom windows, Garden Windows, Double Hung Windows

3 Types of House Windows no homeowner does confuse
Well, every homeowner has to know three types of house windows:
Transom windows for Hall,

Double Hung Windows for Main rooms,
Garden Windows for the Kitchen (smt. not only for the Kitchen).

Transom windowsA window above a door; with an exterior door the transom window is often fixed, if an interior door Transom windows can open and provide ventilation.

Advantages:
Transom windows are especially valuable in warm climates, since they serve as a light source that is shaded from hot sun and are efficient releasing rising warm interior air.

Disdvantages:
Operable Transom windows for exterior doors are often hard to find locally.

Double-Hung Windows

Double Hung Windows are very popular in America today because of their functionality. Both sashes of the Double Hung windows move up or down within the frame. Bottom half can be raised and upper section can be lowered.

Advantages:
Both upper and lower sash of Double Hung windows may be opened to provide ventilation.

Disadvantages:
Sliding sashes of Double Hung windows are often difficult to seal, esp. of the older windows.
If the upper half of Double Hung windows slides down, a pair of tensioners for window sashes will be needed.

Garden Windows
(AKA green house windows)
Garden windows of quality are well insulated at the seat board. They have insulated glass with low E so that growing plants will not be a headache. High-quality garden windows do not leak as long as installed properly nor do casement sashes leak when closed and locked.

Advantages:
Garden windows make rooms look larger and lighter.
Garden windows allow growing plants in winter time, esp. if a window faces south or west.

Disadvantages:
Garden windows may not fit into architectural style of a house.
Insulated Garden windows may have a considered weight.
